Music that goes straight to the heart: The two passacaglias by Louis Couperin (Passacaglia in D minor, originally for harpsichord) and Ludovico Roncalli (Passacaglia in A minor, originally for Baroque guitar) are among the most artful works of their genre. A distinctive feature of these two pieces is their unique formal language: Instead of a sequence of variations on a repeating bass motif, they present thematically self-contained sections alternating with couplets (interludes). With a preface in German and English and fingering suggestions by the arranger, Tilman Hoppstock.
